Domestic shipping

Diesel Quality (GODKrot)
Hoyer’s ship fuel is a standard fuel, which, being used for domestic commercial shipping, is exempt from taxation. This fuel oil is fame free and is coloured in red for identification, regarding the tax law in Germany. This product has a maximum sulphur content of 10 ppm.

Power fuel Diesel quality
A fuel with enhanced storage and combustion features is recommended as an alternative to standard ship fuels, especially for ship propulsion. Experience has shown that the agents of the Power fuel boost significantly the performance level especially of large-volume ship engines, in that they optimize combustion and hence ensure major savings. Storage stability is also improved, which is absolutely crucial given the significant air humidity.

Maritime shipping

Marine fuel oil MGO / DMA 0.1% and other heavy fuel oils
Hoyers heavy fuel oils and MGO / DMA 0.1% are produced according to the ISO 8217/2010 standard and in some cases are suitable for the SECA area (sulphur content of max 0.1). These fuel oils have no bio components!

Currently, the sulphur content of the heavy fuel oils is at max. 3.5%; the “Ultra Low sulphur Fuel Oil (ULSFO)” is max. 0.1%.

Our marine gas oils have a sulphur content of max. 0.1% and a minimum flash point of 60°C, and being tax-exempt for German tax law, they are colored in red.

Additive

Flowguard – additional low
temperature protection

Mix ratio 1:1,000

Flowguard contains some so-called nucleating agents, which provide cooled paraffin with a vast number of condensation cores, in which wax crystals are basically fragmented. This means that dangerously large crystals are turned into trillions of extremely small crystals, which flow through the pipes and filters without problems. Moreover, paraffin crystals are enveloped by a surface limiter, which acts as a sort of orange peel and thus safely prevents the crystals from joining each other.

We recommend using Flowguard in due time already at the end of the summer or in autumn, and adding it to the fuel oil/diesel with temperature above the freezing point. The Flowguard additive must be stored in a frost-protected environment.

The higher the temperature of the fuel/oil diesel, the better the performance of the mixture. At temperatures below zero, the products cannot be mixed equally well. At very low temperatures, when the cloud point has already been reached, the Flowguard additive may even sink to the tank floor, in which case it will have no effect. When the diesel (or fuel oil) is mixed with additives at extremely high outdoor temperatures, it is recommended to load the refinery product, which is often warmer, and to premix it already in the tanker.

Condensate and heat favour the growth of undesired germs in fuel oils and diesel fuels. These generate sludge and organic acids, which may clog the filters and cause corrosion. Often, these products appear in form of brown, sticky residues. Grotamar® 82 is a biocide that kills off quickly and reliably microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and yeasts.

In case of clear signs of filter clogging, a shock dosing with a mix ratio 1:1,000 of the tank contents is necessary. It is not necessary to premix or mix the product. This can be added directly to the tank once this has been drained as much as possible. After the application, the filters might be clogged by dead microorganisms and might thus need to be replaced. In case of significant accumulation of sludge in the tank, before the treatment it is necessary to clean the tank as well as the relevant pipes and filters. A dose of 1:4,000 is recommended as a preventive measure.

Special-Topics - Practical Advice

Winter operations

DIN-compliant fuels are labelled as winter products if from 15 November they are delivered with a max. CFPP of -20°C. CFPP stands for Cold Filter Plugging Point, which indicates the point at which a given standard quantity keeps flowing through a standard filter.

The fuel filter may be clogged even before the CFPP is reached. In actual applications, the following factors contribute to worsening the flow properties of diesel fuels:

  • increasingly sensitive vessel filter systems
  • biodiesel in standard fuels
  • ice crystals
  • lower “felt” temperatures - due to the wind
Keeping the fuel system and the storage and transport tanks clean is the most efficient way to prevent the filters from clogging when the limit values are approached.

The following recommendations for diesel systems refer to winter operations:
  1. Insulate pillars and fuel pipes
  2. Use Power ship fuel throughout the year
  3. Replace the filters in due time before the cold season
  4. Add Flowguard with a mix ratio of 1:1,000 for more protection
  5. Do not expose the vessels to the wind

Seasonal storage

The storage of seasonal vessels always creates problems. And just when the vessels and machines are needed, the filters turn out to be clogged. In virtually all cases, this happens because standard fuel with 7% of biodiesel had been used the year before.

Why can this lead to problems?
As required by the law, mineral diesel fuels generally contain 7% of biodiesel. This however has a hygroscopic effect: it attracts water. This effect is increased in case of long-term storage, as in these cases the fuel “ages” more quickly than usual and can thus provide the ideal habitat for yeasts, fungi or bacteria. Problems occur also when the vessel is stored with summer fuel. In fact, during the cold season cold residues may form, especially due to biodiesel contained in the fuel.

How is it possible to minimize this risk?
We recommend using at least our Power ship fuel. Its peculiar agents increase storage stability and hence hamper the ageing process.

If possible, the vessels should be stored starting at the earliest from October (-10°C mid-season products) or mid November (-20°C winter products). Otherwise, it is in any case recommended to add Flowguard with a 1:1,000 mix ratio. As a further preventive measure against germs, we recommend using Grotamar® with a 1:4,000 mix ratio. This ensures maximum protection.

Our recommendations in short:

  1. During the season, use the Power ship fuel
  2. Use winter products and add Flowguard
  3. Use Grotamar® with a 1:4000 mix ratio
  4. Fill the tanks as much as possible

Tank cleaning

Clean the tanks on a regular basis to increase operating safety and ensure a long service life of the storage tanks. Although the use of Power products and a suitable care of the tank system provide significant protection, it is absolutely recommended to clean the tanks on a regular basis.

General market-based recommendations:
for diesel fuels every 5-7 years
for RME bio heating fuel every 2-3 years
